update 27-Feb-2022
I am writing this card in the New Sacristy (San Lorenzo). Certainly one of the most beautiful interiors in the
world. One cannot imagine how wonderfully it has been designed: there can be no other place like this in
Europe. Florence is lovely. Four days of real joy.
Wim Blom a postcard to Oliver Knight, September 27, 1949
I
am
sitting
in
the
church
of
San
Salvatore.
Possibly
it
has
the
most
successful
interior
of
Venetian
churches,
with
its
beautiful
grey
stone
work
against
white
walls.
Every
so
often
I
glance
towards
Titian’s
dark
Annunciation
in
its
side
chapel.
On
this
day
I
can
say
I
have
visited
every
church
in
Venice,
except
one
which
is
always
closed
why?
No
one
knows.
My
mind
is
like
a
jumbled
storeroom
with
confused
impressions
of
paintings.
Some
of
the
best
have
left
indelible
traces,
but
it
is no longer important to remember in which churches they are.
